BRICK HOUSE, STROUD
The project explores ways in which the existing footprint and volume of the rear half of the house can be rearranged to create the impression of an enlarged family home with the shared spaces orientated towards the garden.
Home to a young family, the clients brief included creating a space, or series of spaces, that can be shared by multi-generations. Spaces that are robust, characterful and celebrate the red brick and/or dual pitch of the existing house.
The images above show two options for how this could be achieved. Option 01 maximises the space internally, opening the ground floor rooms to one another and introducing a double height space in the centre of the plan. The double height space is open to the rafters and provides a moment of loftiness with a visual connection between the two floors. Option 02 proposes minimal intervention to the ground floor plan with new windows and doors between rooms and the garden. Internally the room meticulously celebrates the surface of a brick, with the monolithic floor and an oversized kitchen table.
