THE OLD COBBLERS
The Old Cobblers looks at a new form of flexible housing provision in Hayle, Cornwall. The aim was to develop a house type that’s structure could facilitate a flexible arrangement and therefore accommodate a variety of different family types. The project looked to use local skills and resources to provide affordable, environmentally responsible housing.
The project was run in partnership with our client who, having been raised in Cornwall, brought local knowledge and a different perspective to the housing supply problems.
From this research we have developed a house plan that consolidates the services along one edge freeing the remaining area. A single structural timber column is dropped into the centre of the plan and provides an armature for future stud walls to be installed. The floor plate can either be open plan or divided into five equally sized rooms across the two floors.
Located on the edge of the World Heritage Site in Hayle, the project uses locally sourced materials to emulate the neighbouring dwellings and continue the historic fabric.
