HOUSE ON LISMORE ROAD

Our clients at Lismore Road approached us to re-work the existing ground floor layout of their London terraced house.  The existing living room at the front of the ground floor was a beautiful room with pleasing proportions, however the dining room and kitchen had been housed in a previous small extension at the rear of the house.  The access to the garden was awkward and the spaces to the rear were dark.

The proposals for the re-design focused on improving connectivity throughout the whole ground floor, from the existing living room, through the new kitchen/dining space and out into the garden.  We were keen for the garden to be visible from the living space at the front of the house.  To achieve this we built a modest side extension to extend the kitchen to be the full width of the plot, whilst otherwise working with the existing footprint of the previous extension.  We re-insulated, re-roofed and re-clad this instead of re-building.

The new kitchen/ dining space has direct views out into the garden, and a much improved access which steps down onto a paved terrace area.  In order to keep a connection between the living space and the kitchen/dining we introduced a timber hatch in place of the existing exterior sash window.  This hatch allows for flexibility between the rooms, it can be kept open during the day to benefit from borrowed light and views, and then closed down at night if the clients wish to use the rooms separately.

The material palette used is simple yet elegant, creating a series of calm and sensitive spaces which complement the landscaped garden and existing garden study.
