HOUSING ON BROADWAY, DIDCOT
The brief recognised that Broadway, the original high street in Didcot, has been recently neglected with a number of derelict and run down properties. In order to act as a catalyst for future development, a site on the centre of Broadway was highlighted as an opportunity to re-introduce a sense of community. The brief was for a mixed use development of nine dwellings, including the renovation and repurposing of an existing semi-detached building.
The proposals are for the introduction of two new buildings arranged around a series of outdoor spaces. The new buildings are set back from Broadway in order to create a south facing public space with the ground floor commercial units, including a new community centre in the existing semi-detached building, fronting onto it. A communal courtyard is at the centre of the plan which the residents and community are encouraged to adopt. Private balconies overlook the outdoor spaces and act a visual marker for the residential entrances at ground floor.
