FAIRLIGHT, WEST SUSSEX

Fairlight is a new workplace in a valley in the South Downs, West Sussex.  The building has been designed to carefully and sympathetically sit within the landscape whilst creating a workplace that promotes wellness - both physically and mentally - for its employees.

The building massing has been split into two low profile forms that slide past each other along a central axis and run parallel with the valley edges of the Downs. The building forms are reminiscent of agricultural buildings, reinterpreted for its purpose to house a new workplace.

The central axis between the two building forms houses the entrance to the building.  This is accessed via pathways carved into the established landscape in both directions.  Emphasis has been placed on the journey to work, including the experience of walking through the landscape, being met by an external courtyard on entry and the long views of the South Downs in the communal spaces. The canteen and breakout space are orientated to the south with beautiful views over the Downs whilst the office space and meeting rooms are towards the north of the site and the valley edge.

The long elevation of the communal area and the canteen is articulated by the repetitive timber column structure and full height glazing that provides uninterrupted views of the landscape. The overhanging roof provides both shading from the southern sun and a space to spill out from the canteen.
